A collection of collections, the Virtual Museum of Canada has items from many different museums across Canada. It can also help those who want to visit offline, as the site also includes museum news and details for those who want to visit Canada's museums.

The "Virtual Exhibits", "Image Gallery", and "Teachers' Centre" tabs near the top of the homepage should not be missed.

The "Virtual Exhibits" have a variety of different offerings, including exhibits on war orphans from the Holocaust, a Cariboo civilization, and a history of Olympic bids.

In the "Image Gallery", a thumbnail of each image or object is provided along with its title and clickable link to the museum where it came from. Visitors should click on "More" or just on the image, to read details about the item and see an enlarged version of it.

There are over 780,000 images to view, so visitors might want to bookmark the site for subsequent visits.

The "Teachers' Centre" contains "Lesson Plans", "Featured Museum Learning Resources", and the ability to browse all the learning resources for grades one through university levels, and even adult learners

"Absorb" Online Library

Absorb is a series of interactive online courses for secondary schools, covering physics, chemistry, electronics, mathematics and advanced physics.

Just expanded - free "Absorb" online library of whiteboard resources. There are now nearly 1600 free resources available, including videos, interactive animations, simulations and images, which cover mathematics, physics, chemistry and electronics. They can be used either at school or at home.

Also, you can now download the resources - so you can add them to your school's network, or to your existing Powerpoint lessons. There's a small fee for this - but it's excellent value, as you get to download many resources for one payment.

Each of the twelve instructional resources on the site contains a brief overview of the topic, and then a "Research Investigation" assignment. Students can complete these investigations using the materials within each lesson, and they can also take a look at some additional readings which explain key concepts. The site also contains a "Words of Science" section, which provides concise definitions of basic terms, such as entropy and glucose.

ThatQuiz is a free online resource for math practice and testing. It was written in the summer of 2004 and later expanded according to teacher needs and requests. The original goal was to provide easily accessible software for schools which were not fully utilizing the computers they had in their classrooms. The site has also become popular for students who want extra math practice at home. Although the first tests available were most suitable for elementary school students, new areas have been added for higher grades: algebra, angles, triangles, probability and geometry.

All users have access to all of the tests without registration. There is no reason for students to register since the additional features are only useful for teachers. Registration is free and teachers who choose to register receive record-keeping of scores for their classes. They have access to more precise test-generation tools, can create single tests with questions from different categories, can create matching and multiple choice questions, and can access a public test library.

Even though EXPLO.TV sounds like an edgy punk website, it's actually the video component of the Exploratorium: Museum of Science, Art and Human Perception in San Francisco. This website has some excellent ways to learn about science--such as webcasts, podcasts, and video clips.

At the top of the page visitors will find several ways to browse: "Presentation Type", "Program Type", or "Category". Within the categories section visitors will find: "Everyday Science", "History of Science", and "Popular Science in Action". "Upcoming Webcasts" is another feature on the homepage, and there are a number of fine webcasts here.

Visitors can also subscribe to a monthly e-newsletter that keeps them updated on the happenings and special events at the Exploratorium.

The National Agricultural Library, along with the USDA and the American Society of Animal Science are collaborators on this website of animal science images. The images, animations, and videos, which also have accompanying text, are intended for classroom and educational outreach. Additionally, the site also encourages the public to submit their own images relevant to animal science, and it also fully explains the process of selection, the criteria the image must meet to be suitable for classroom and educational outreach, and the copyright and use information for each submission. On the left side of the page are the categories of animals and
topics included on the website. Some of the links include "Dairy Cattle", "Companion Animals", "Horses", "Poultry", "Genetics", "Reproduction", and "Nutrition". Although some of the categories have fewer images than others, such as Companion Animals, others such as "Nutrition" and "Horses" have over 100 images. For categories that do have images, the visitor can choose to view subcategories, or just view all the images in the category. Once you've chosen an image to view, you will initially see a thumbnail and a description of the image. If you click on "Image Details" at the bottom of each description, you will be privy to details such as the date created, image rights, how many times downloaded, and how many times viewed. Conveniently, you can download the image in different file and dimensional sizes to suit your needs.

The Internet is full of useful information, but it's disorganized and often unreliable. The potential of the Internet for education is especially huge.

Imagine tapping into that potential.

Imagine collecting all the best free educational videos made for children, and making them findable and watchable on one website. Then imagine creating many, many more such videos.

Just think: hundreds of thousands of great short videos, and other media, explaining every topic taught in schools, in every major language on Earth.

Finally, imagine them all deeply and usefully categorized according to subject, education level, and placed in the order in which topics are typically taught.

WatchKnow--as in, "You watch, you know"--is trying to do this.

WatchKnow a non-profit, online community that encourages everyone to collect, create, and share free, innovative, educational videos.

WatchKnow is now available for beta-testing, although it is not yet "officially" launched (see News below). Whether you’re a teacher, a student, or just someone who cares about the education of children, you can now get involved. Please sign up--but note that you can add new videos to our system without signing up (they'll have to be approved first).

There is no better cause to support online than the future of our children. And just imagine how fantastic it would be if there were a resource online we could go to, or send our kids to, that would explain every topic they study in school instantly and reliably.

If we get together, we can create it.
